Hi Pat,
I saw your ad on craiglist and would like to place an order. These chairs will be perfect for my front yard landscaping project and patio I have added. I am looking for two adirondack chairs and I am also interested in the table just like you are building for Lori. These would all be stained - I have to get to Hirshfield's to look at the colors. What would the price be on that?
Thanks
Nick

Good Morning Nick,
Stained chairs are $175 each and the table is $35.
I use two different products for staining
Sikkens Cetol 1 - A Translucent Satin Finish
Sikkens Rubbol DEK - A Solid Stain with a Satin Sheen
Sikkens Rubbol Solid DEK - A Solid Stain with a Low Lustre Sheen
Look for the View Colors link in the PDF.

The folks at Hirshfields are pretty good.

I've also put together a staining guide you might want to look at.

I'll be calling today just to introduce myself and to verify the order.
It will take about three days to build your chairs and two to three days to finish.
I'll be sending you a link so you can follow along in the building and staining process.
Free delivery is included and payment would be due on delivery.
Good luck with the landscaping project. It's a hobby of mine as well.
If you have any questions, all you have to do is ask.
Thank you,
pat

A lot of work was done on your chairs today.
Mostly good, one bad.

This is wear it starts. All images here will produce a very large image. This is the stock from which the Angle Legs are made. |

A trip though the band saw. And sanding...much sanding. |

Cross pieces being attached with 3" screws. |

A bit more sanding. One of four sanding actually. |

Front brace with two inch screws. |

Legs in place with arm supports. |

Side view showing leg support bolts. Everything glued with an outdoor adhesive. |

Now these arms are the best cedar I've seen in two years Note that lack of knots. I'm always working around them. |

30 seconds later and I've ruined one of them. Router bit was set too high. This piece will be reused but it's just a shame. Rather then try to reglue it's best just to move on and make another. This really bothered me Nick. |

Final images of the arms ready to be installed. The replace for the ruined arm is on the left. It's good and you never would have noticed it but it's part of my document on on ever chair. It's the way they just keep getting better.
I really hated losing that arm. |
What you've seen took 10 hours.
I'm not the fastest woodworker but my attention to detail makes the difference.
On Wed I intend to have your chairs complete.
I'm kinda chatty when doing this, no need to respond.
No images were cut and paste, these are your chairs being built. Hope you enjoy them.

A little break.

This first back slat is very important.
It must be square. Now consider this. Hold a board in the air at an angle and make sure its square with the ground. Not easy but it makes the perfect chair.
I know, I'm blowing my own horn...sorry.
In the background to the right you'll see a couple of cases of Mountain Crest a classic Lager brewed in Wisconsin. Need to get them in the fridge for later. Ok some people get Pepsi endorsements, I get beer endorsements. |

Your chairs with the back slats attached.
You'll find a total of 20 holes with 20 two inch screws.
Each hole will be plugged with a hand made dowel cut from the scrape lumber of the planks.
I think you might find the results interesting.
Arms next and then seat slats. |
Ok chairs are now complete. Well I still have to do seat slats for the second one but that takes all of 30 minutes or so.
Now the table takes a bit longer, about three hours.
According to Quality Control (my wife Kay) this one is five of five thumbs up. Two boards I found while digging were just exceptional in quality. Very small tight knots almost clear cedar. The best I've seen in years. As always I name at least one of the chairs while build them.

Meet Lucky.

Second namings cost extra Nick. Sorry union rules and such.
But I was listening to Van Halen while doing the back slats on it.
First coat of stain is on, a little rubdown with steel wool and on to the second coat in the morning.
Between the second and third coats your chairs will get a sanding, a cleaning and another coat of stain.
Now, if I thinks it's needed I'll apply a fourth coat of stain. That's always a judgment call on my part.

Update.
Bit of a set back, the front seat plank on one of the chairs needs to be replaced. I noticed a check when taking these images.
More stain before the rain sets in.
Chair on the left only one coat. Chair on the right two coats except for the seat slats. Table one coat.
This explains the color difference you may see.

Had to replace the front seat slat in one of your chairs due to a check.
This required restraining that piece.
One more coat and it will match the rest of the chair.
Your chair now has a very gentle shine to it.
I hit all surfaces today with a 300 grits sandpaper and a final dry brush staining.
Your chair should be ready by 3pm on Monday. I would suggest a delivery no sooner than Tuesday July 7th.
I'll be posting images in the morning on Monday after a final inspection.
The table, is just wonderful. I played with it a little bit and it came out fantastic.
Please let me know where and when for delivery. And Nick I'm in no rush, whatever is convenient for you.
It has been my pleasure making these chairs for you.
