I have always used a stain made by Sikkens called Cetol 1. It has never caused a problem in all the years I've been using it.
It is a premium stain. But it does have it's draw backs, namely color.
Important Note:
Like anything outdoors my chairs will require re-staining about every two years or so depending on conditions.
Sikkens is sold through all Hirshfield's locations. And yes it's the best stain that money can buy.
